Geneva, NY - The SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons women tennis team began their spring season coming off an 11-4 fall campaign and a semi-final finish in the State University of NY Athletic Conference; Unfortunately they ran into the regionally ranked #20 William Smith Herons on Saturday. The long layoff from the fall season found the Red Dragons very rusty. With a new look lineup in tow the Red Dragons suffered a 9-0 shutout loss.
Transfer sophomore
Alyssa Brault (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) teamed with freshman Jacqueline Guidice and played at number 1 doubles for the first time and suffered a 2-8 loss. The number two flighted team also played for the first time together as senior
Alana Green (Pittsford/Pittsford) and sophomore
Faith Haedrich (Islip/Islip) kept things close but lost by one service break 6-8. The number three team of senior
Kayla Houle (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy) and junior
Samantha Felice (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) had a challenging afternoon and could not get untracked dropping a lopsided decision 1-8.
The Red Dragons were down 0-3 after the doubles stanza and things did not go any better during singles play. All six singles players were setback completing the Herons shutout of the Red Dragons. The closest match of the afternoon was at number five singles as Houle dropped the first set 2-6 but lost only by one service break in the second set 4-6.
The Red Dragon women's spring season does not get any easier as they head to Wilkes Barre, PA to play the Wilkes University Colonels the perennial MAC Freedom Champions in Wilkes Barre, PA on Friday, April 7th beginning at 4 PM.
