Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's lacrosse defeats Geneseo to open SUNYAC schedule

The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team got balanced scoring and solid goalie play today in defeating SUNY Geneseo 12-9 in the opening game of the SUNYAC schedule for both squads.  Sophomore Kelsey Cohen (Baldwin/Baldwin) netted four goals and senior Katie Flannery (Massapequa/Plainedge) posted three assists to lead Oneonta (4-3, 1-0 SUNYAC).

Kathleen DePillo got Geneseo (4-3, 0-1 SUNYAC) started scoring the game's first goal 2:02 into the game on a free position shot.

Flannery tied the game five minutes later with an unassisted goal before a goal by Lauren Corbett put the Knights ahead for the last time in the contest.

The Red Dragons grabbed the momentum with four straight goals during a 14-minute stretch to take a 5-2 lead.  Jaime Morris (West Nyack/Clarkstown South), Cara Zanta (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville Senior), Cohen and Taylor Casey (Garden City South/Kellenberg Memorial) all scored for Oneonta.  Flannery contributed an assist on the goals by Zanta and Cohen.

Rachel Fisher and Maddie Lee scored back-to-back for Geneseo to cut the lead to one goal, but Cohen scored her second of the game to give Oneonta a 6-4 lead heading to intermission.

The Red Dragons maintained its lead moving it to a margin of three goals on two occasions at 7-4 and 9-6.

After back-to-back unassisted goals by Geneseo to cut its deficit to one goal once again, Cohen scored again to put Oneonta ahead 10-8 with less than nine minutes to go in the game.

Tessa Doody scored for Geneseo less than 30 seconds later, but that would be it for the Knights, as Zanta and Morris notched consecutive goals to close out the scoring to secure the victory for Oneonta.

Sophomore goalie Jaclyn Marry (Long Beach/Long Beach) turned in another solid performance for Oneonta making 10 saves including eight in the second half.

Oneonta will host New Paltz on Tuesday on Red Dragon Field beginning at 4pm.
