Junior
Matthew Boyd (Hempstead/Half Hollow Hills East) hit a jumper with three seconds left on the clock to lift the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team to a 66-64 victory tonight against DeSales University on the opening day of the Dutch Burch Tip-off hosted by Lycoming. Oneonta (2-0) will face the hosts tomorrow in the championship game scheduled for a 3pm tip-off.
Â
Boyd's winner came out of a timeout after he stole the ball to give the Red Dragons the last opportunity. Boyd finished the game with 10 points and was one of four players to score in double figures for Oneonta tonight.
Â
A three-point basket by DeSales' (1-1) Tracy Simsick put them up by a bucket with 1:50 left in the contest. Sophomore
Kevin Mackin (Nanuet/Nanuet) converted a pair of free throws to knot the score at the 1:27 mark.
Â
Each team had two possessions in the final 1:27 each committing turnovers and coming away empty. Boyd gained both steals for the Red Dragons.
Â
With just under five minutes remaining, Oneonta trailed 61-57 before running off five unanswered to grab a 62-61 lead with 3:38 to go. Boyd made a breakaway layup after receiving a pass from senior
Dwayne Freeman (Schenectady/Notre-Dame Bishop Gibbons). Freeman had converted a three-point play prior to Boyd's basket to bring Oneonta to within one point.
Â
DeSales scored five unanswered points to close the first half and take a slim 28-27 lead into halftime. Sophomore
Carson Jacobs (Buchanan/Hendrick Hudson) led Oneonta with eight points off the bench. Jacobs and freshman
Andres Rivera (Bronx/Walton) led the reserves with 11 and 12 points respectively. Rivera scored all of his points in the second half.
Â
Sophomore
Kevin Mackin (Nanuet/Nanuet) led the Red Dragons with 17 points hitting five three-pointers in the game.
Â
Oneonta outrebounded DeSales 44-35 led by Boyd's eight boards.
