Game Recap: Field Hockey | | Sierra Palmatier scores lone Oneonta goal in the match

Field Hockey exits SUNYAC Tournament in semifinal loss to New Paltz, 2-1

Oneonta, NY. The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team was upended by the SUNY New Paltz Hawks in the SUNYAC Tournament semifinals, 2-1. The Hawks improved to 7-11, and are headed to SUNY Cortland to take on the Cortland Red Dragons in the SUNYAC Championship on Saturday. The Red Dragons finish their season with a 13-6 record, and a second place finish in the SUNYAC regular season with a 5-1 record.

In the first half of the match, the Red Dragons played a relatively even game with the Hawks, Oneonta held a slight advantage in shots with seven to New Paltz's six. The Red Dragons also had four penalty corners to the Hawks two.

Out of the break with the score tied at zero, the Hawks had an opportunity in the 39th minute to take the lead but a sharp defensive save by senior Nicole Johnston (Bedford Village/Fox Lane) kept the game tied. The Hawks would find a way to break the tie two minutes later when Haley Kim punched in goal from the middle of the circle, 1-0.

The Red Dragons answered eight minutes later when senior Sierra Palmatier (Nineveh/Afton Central) found the back of the cage on a loose ball scramble to knot the game 1-1. In the 58th minute the Hawks came back with a breakaway goal by Carly Croteau. She took a shot that the goaltender saved, but acting quickly she gathered her rebound and beat the goalie to take a 2-1 lead.

In the game, sophomore Danell Jones (Whitney Point/Whitney Point) had seven saves, and for New Paltz Megan Gangwere had seven saves also.
