Men's soccer sews up first round playoff bye at Fredonia

Red Dragons come from behind to defeat Blue Devils

The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team pulled out a 2-1 win at Fredonia today to close out its SUNYAC schedule.  The win for the Red Dragons earned a bye for the first round and will host a semifinal match on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 1pm against the winner of the Buffalo State/Geneseo game that will be played on Oct. 28.

"That was another tough conference game," said Head Coach Iain Byrne.  "Fredonia fought until the end, but we managed to hold on for the win and lock up a first round bye in the tournament."

Oneonta (12-1-2/7-1-1 SUNYAC) outshot Fredonia (8-7-2/2-5-2 SUNYAC) 14-5 in the opening half of play, but trailed 1-0.  A goal by Dylan Moeser in the 16th minute put the Blue Devils in front early.  Moeser's goal came after junior goalkeeper, Nicholas Giordano (East Northport/Commack), made two saves.

The Red Dragons continued its relentless offensive onslaught in the second half putting 20 shots on the board connecting for the first time early in the half.

Senior Cory Santangelo (Sayville/Sayville) scored the equalizer in the 49th minute when he headed in a crossing pass from junior Nicholas Plate (Miller Place/Sachem North).

Eleven minutes later, Plate scored his first goal of the season on a breakaway registering the eventual game-winner.

The Oneonta defense held Fredonia to just eight shots in the match including only three in the second half none of them on goal.  Giordano finished with two saves to earn his eleventh win of the season.
