After falling behind early today, the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team rebounded quickly scoring four unanswered goals en route to a 4-1 nonconference victory against Hamilton College. The victory ended the regular season for Oneonta (13-1-2), as they turn its attention to the postseason beginning next Wednesday at home when they host a SUNYAC tournament semifinal game at 1pm. The Red Dragons will face the winner of the Buffalo State/Geneseo game taking place this Saturday.
Â
"Today's win against a tough NESCAC team rounds off a tremendous regular season for us," stated Head Coach
Iain Byrne. "For the second straight game we came from behind.  We are in good shape heading into the postseason."
Â
The two teams went end-to-end in the opening 10 minutes of the match. After a pair of shots by Oneonta, it was Hamilton (7-6-2) who got the game's first goal on its opening shot.
Â
Greg Milnarik finished off a pair of passes with a redirect by the keeper. The first pass came into the box from the right flank by Jefri Schmidt. Once in the box, Bobby Chapman then pushed a pass right into the goal area where Milnarik got his foot on the ball to redirect the ball to the back of the goal.
Â
Oneonta didn't take long to knot the score at one apiece with its first goal coming just over one minute later. The goal was a carbon copy of Hamilton's where two passes were made before being finished to the back of the goal.
Â
Sophomore
Witman Hernandez (Huntington/Walt Whitman) scored the first of his two goals when he redirected a pass from junior
Nicholas Plate (Miller Place/Sachem North). Plate had received the ball from sophomore
Daniel Ioos (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham), who crossed it into the box from the right flank.
Â
The Red Dragons held an 8-2 advantage in shots in the first half, but the two teams headed to halftime locked at 1-1.
Â
Oneonta's next two goals came just minutes apart from each other in the 53
rd and 55
th minutes. Junior
Justin Cebollero (Commack/Commack) put his head on a service from Plate on a corner kick to give Oneonta a 2-1 lead. Hernandez then finished off a pair of passes from freshmen
Roberto Ventura (Brentwood/Brentwood) and
Scott Cebollero (Commack/Commack) to put the Red Dragons ahead by a pair of goals.
Â
Senior
