WILLIAMSTOWN, MA—In their first home game since December 8th, the Williams College Ephs (11-1) returned to Chandler Gymnasium and got a win over SUNY Oneonta (6-5), 74-62. The loss for the Red Dragons snapped its five-game win streak.
Leading three players in double figures tonight was senior
Lawrence Coleman (Croton on the Hudson/Hendrick Hudson) who scored 16 points to go with a game high 11 rebounds. Freshman
Kevin Mackin (Nanuet/Nanuet) came off the bench to score 14 points while senior
Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) added 13 points.
Williams got off to a fast start in tonight's contest led by Kyle Scadlock who scored 14 of his game high 21 points in the first half. The Ephs carried a 13-point lead into the intermission aided by 33 percent shooting by Oneonta that included 0-for-8 from behind the arc.
After building a sizeable lead through the first 12 minutes of the opening half, the Red Dragons chipped away at Williams' lead behind the strong play of senior
Jack Kolosky (Fishkill/Our Lady of Lourdes) and McElroy.
In the second half, Oneonta continued to cut into its deficit. With around twelve minutes to play, Mackin gave the Red Dragons life with a three-pointer--their first of the game in ten attempts—and Oneonta proceeded to launch a 13-4 run over the next five minutes, at times looking like they couldn't miss even if they wanted to. Capped by another Mackin trey—he would make four of Oneonta's five in the contest—the Red Dragons cut the margin to just four with seven minutes to go.
Two pairs of free throws from James Heskett gave the Ephs some breathing room, but yet another trey from Mackin cut the deficit to three, 58-55. Williams continued to shoot and miss threes, but their defense held the Red Dragons scoreless until Dan Aronowitz got a tough layup to fall. Cole Teal followed with a three-pointer with three minutes to go, and Kyle Scadlock sunk a pair of foul shots to make it eight unanswered.
Two buckets by
Lawrence Coleman (Croton on the Hudson/Hendrick Hudson), one accompanied by a foul shot, tried to pull Oneonta back, but a put back by Michael Kempton and a three-point play of his own for Scadlock put the score at 70-60 in the final minute. Teal sealed Williams's victory with a 4-4 showing from the line in the final minute, and the final buzzer sounded with the score 74-62.
Joining Scadlock in double figures for the Ephs was Teal who added 15 and Aronowitz who contributed 16 points and five steals. Michael Kempton led the Ephs with seven boards.
Oneonta returns to action on Friday, January 6th at Oswego.
