Seniors
Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) and
Lawrence Coleman (Croton on the Hudson/Hendrick Hudson) posted 22 and 20 points respectively, but the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team was upended at Oswego tonight 87-78. The loss for the Red Dragons evened its overall record to 6-6 while falling to 3-2 in the SUNYAC. McElroy scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half while Coleman scored 14 in the closing twenty minutes.
Â
Oneonta trailed by as many as 14 points early in the second half after Oswego (8-3, 4-1 SUNYAC) broke open a close game with a 17-6 burst in the first five minutes to start the half.
Â
The Red Dragons countered with a 15-5 spurt over the next five minutes capped by a three-pointer by McElroy and a layup by graduate student
Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) to cut the Lakers lead back to four points 62-58. Kelly finished the game with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Â
After Oswego built its lead back to double digits, the Red Dragons stormed right back and got as close as two points on a McElroy layup with 4:06 remaining. A pair of free throws by Coleman two minutes later, got the Red Dragons to within a point at 78-77. Unfortunately for Oneonta, this would be as close as they would get the rest of the way, as the Lakers' Brian Sortino made 6-of-6 free throws to complete nine unanswered points to end the game.
Â
Oneonta shot 48 percent from the floor and made 18-of-25 free throws. The Lakers held a 40-33 advantage off the glass while shooting an even 50 percent. Oswego had four players in double figures led by Sortino and Keith Tyson who each scored 20 points.
Â
Oneonta will be in action again tomorrow afternoon when they play its rival Red Dragons at Cortland beginning at 2pm.
