Wrestling earns two victories at Wilkes; Bethel and Pjetri go 3-0

The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team headed down to Wilkes University today to compete in a quad and left with two victories and one loss. The Red Dragons improved their duals record to 10-3-1 on the season after defeating both Washington & Jefferson College and Keystone College. Their only loss on the day came at the hands of host Wilkes, in a match that was decided by four points, 22-18.

The Red Dragons opened with Wilkes. The Red Dragons would win every match over 165 lbs., but Wilkes would have two fall (6pt) victories at 149 lbs. and 157 lbs. that Oneonta could not dig themselves out of to take the dual. In the match, senior Evan Wallace (East Greenbush/Columbia) would win by decision with a shutout (3-0). Sophomores Lantze Lange (Smithtown/Smithtown West) and Peter Pjetri (Suffern/Suffern) would both win by decision. Junior James Bethel (Saugerties/Saugerties) would win the heavyweight class by forfeit.

In the second round of the quad, Oneonta defeated Washington and Jefferson by a score of 32-13.  Junior Austin Sisco (Denville, NJ/Pope John Regional) would win the 133 lbs. class by a fall in 1:51. At 165 lbs., Wallace would win by fall in 2:45, and Pjetri would win the 197 lbs. class with a fall at 3:16. The Red Dragons would tally eight team points with two major decisions from senior Richard Dennison (Port Jervis/Minisink Valley) (141 lbs) and Bethel (285).

In the last dual of the day for Oneonta, they dominated Keystone with a landslide victory 53-0. The Red Dragons benefitted from four forfeits while also tacking on 18 points off of three pins by Nicholas Heck (West Pittston/Wyoming Area) at 149 lbs., Daniel Murphy (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham) at 157 lbs. and Bethel.   
 
Pjetri and Bethel both finished the day with 3-0 records while recording one fall apiece.

The Red Dragons are back on the mat on Saturday, February 4th in a Quad Meet with Williams, Wesleyan and Ithaca. The first match is scheduled to start at noon in Chase Gymnasium.
