GLASSBORO, N.J. – The No. 3 SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team fell 3-2 today in its season opener to Washington and Lee on the second day of the Gilmore Alumni Classic hosted by Rowan University. The Red Dragons will complete its two-day journey to New Jersey when they play the hosts at noon.
Sophomore forward Will Hamryka scored a pair of goals for the Generals, including the game-winner in the 80th minute. Seniors
Anthony Passiatore (South Setauket/Ward Melville) and
Jake Foley (Commack/Commack) each scored for the Red Dragons.
Oneonta got on the board first at the 4:59 mark when senior midfielder
Colin Volpe (Commack/St. Anthony's)'s pass from the left side of the box found Passiatore, who placed it just over W&L junior goalkeeper Gillen Beck. The Generals would even the score just 1:25 later, when Hamryka found the back of the net in the 7th minute, off of assists from sophomore midfielders Dylan Ritch and Kevin Lencioni.
The two teams would enter halftime locked at 1-1. W&L held a slight advantage in shots 6-5.
W&L took the lead in the second half at the 57:06 mark, when Ritch won the ball at the goal line and beat Oneonta senior goalkeeper
Mike Gaffary (Bay Shore/St. John the Baptist). W&L held the lead until 78:09 when Foley scored off a free kick that was assisted by sophomore midfielder
Alejandro Ruiz (Brentwood/Brentwood) and senior defender
Zachary Southworth (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy).
The match didn't stay tied for long as the Blue and White responded with immediate pressure and were awarded a penalty kick at 79:12 after a push in the box. Hamryka took the kick for the Generals and sent the ball into the goal for a 3-2 lead that W&L was able to maintain for the final 10 minutes of play.
Oneonta finished the contest with an 11-10 advantage in shots and a 9-6 edge in corner kicks. Beck played all 90 minutes in goal for the Blue and White and recorded a pair of saves. Gaffary made three saves for Oneonta.
