Men's Soccer continues to roll with win at Geneseo

Red Dragons record eighth straight victory

GENESEO N.Y. – The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team came from behind today to defeat SUNY Geneseo 3-1 in SUNYAC action.  After falling behind 1-0, the Red Dragons rolled to its eighth straight win while moving its conference record to 3-0.

"That was a great come-from-behind win for us," said Head Coach Iain Byrne.  "With so many players missing, our depth was the key.  Once again, freshman Witman Hernandez (Huntington/Walt Whitman) was fantastic leading the way."

Geneseo (5-4-1, 1-2 SUNYAC) opened the scoring in the 23rd minute. D'Amico took advantage of a Red Dragon defensive mistake and got the ball inside of the box. His first shot was saved by Oneonta first-year goalkeeper Ryan Wilson (Poughkeepsie/Arlington), but the ball fell back to D'Amico's feet and he slotted the ball under Wilson for the goal.  Wilson finished the match with seven saves to record his eighth straight win in goal for Oneonta.

With less than a minute remaining in the first half, the Red Dragons drew level on an own goal. A failed clearance by the Geneseo defense resulted in a tie game going into halftime.

Oneonta (8-2) pulled ahead in the 59th minute after senior back Zachary Southworth (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) scored from close range. He was assisted on the play by senior midfielder Hans Purtell (Johnson City/Johnson City), who played in a nice pass from the left end line and into the path of Southworth for the goal.

The Red Dragons finished the scoring in the 81st minute when Hernandez scored after a kick save from Geneseo first-year goalkeeper Dillon Medd fell into his path inside the six-yard box.

Medd was stout in goal, recording a career high nine saves in the loss.

Oneonta completes its two-day swing through Rochester with a match at Brockport tomorrow at 1pm.
