Box Score SUNY Oneonta 2, Utica College 1
The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team came from behind to beat Utica College the second game of the North Country Tournament, coming back from a 1-0 deficit early in the second half to win their first game of the season.
Sophomore Carissa Warren (Harpursville /Harpursville) started the Red Dragons' first scoring play, driving from midfield through the Utica defense all the way to the net, where Pioneer goalkeeper Samantha Whitehouse came out to challenge her. She dished the ball out to sophomore teammmate Allyson Wells (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) who was parked at the left post and tucked the ball in the net.
Warren also set up the game-winning goal, gaining control of the ball on a penalty corner and tucking it past two defenders to junior Madeline Reilly (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon), who hit the short side of the net to give the Red Dragons a 2-1 lead.
Jessica Belt got the Pioneers on the board, gathering a loose ball after Melissa Koch's shot off a penalty corner was blocked and sending a hard shot into the right side of the net.
Oneonta dominated in the first half, outshooting Utica 11-2 and holding a 6-0 advantage on penalty corners but was unable to finish and put the ball in the net. The Red Dragons finished the game with a 22-7 edge in shots and a 13-2 advantage on penalty corners.
Sophomore Cassandra Miller (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) made one save to earn the win for Oneonta, while Whitehouse stopped 13 shots for the Pioneers.
