The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team collected their second win in two days while extended its winning streak to seven by shutting out Oswego 6-0. The Red Dragons improve to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC, and the Oswego Lakers drop to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in the SUNYAC.
The Red Dragons came out of the gate hungry in today's match. Oneonta fired five shots, three on goal before they would punch one to the back of the net. On a free kick from the left side of the 18, sophomore Alejandro Ruiz struck a direct kick over the wall and beat the goalkeeper in the top left corner of the net for the first goal of the match. This was Ruiz's second goal of the season and was scored in the 16
th minute of the match.
The second goal of the match for the Red Dragons came 19 minutes later in the 35th minute. Sophomore
Carlos Martinez (Brentwood/Brentwood) netted his first goal of the season on an identical situation as the first goal off a free kick outside the 18. The Red Dragons took its two-goal lead into halftime.
Coming out of the half the Red Dragons kept the pressure on the Lakers, scoring its next goal in the 50
th minute. Once again it was Martinez finiding the back of the goal to give the Red Dragons a 3-0 lead. The Red Dragons next goal was not far behind, when senior Dillion Johnson received a pass at the top of the box from freshman Whitman Hernandez to beat the goaltender with a power strike in the top half of the net. This was Johnson's fifth goal of the season and Hernandez's fourth assist.Â
The Red Dragons would add two more goals, both scored by freshman
Giraldo Ritaccio (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) to finish the game with a commanding six goal victory. Coach Iain Bryne said "Today was a great showing and a few players got their chance and really made an impression. After graduating so many players last year, we had many holes to fill, but these younger players have taken to the college game. The future of the program looks really promising."
The Red Dragons next match is this coming Friday against conference opponent SUNY Geneseo at Geneseo.
