The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team ran into nationally ranked St. John Fisher today at home and fell 12-6. The loss dropped the Red Dragons to 1-3 while the Cardinals remained perfect on the year at 5-0.
Â
The Red Dragons found it tough going this afternoon against a very sting defense that had only allowed 13 goals entering the contest. Oneonta was held to 11 shots, but did manage to make a run midway through the second half before St. John Fisher regrouped to secure the victory.
Â
Fisher got on the scoreboard first on an unassisted goal by Jordan Johnson at the 26:51 mark of the opening half.
Â
Two minutes later, the freshmen tandem of
Kelsey Cohen (Baldwin/Baldwin) and
Cara Zanta (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville Senior) hooked up to tie the game at one apiece.
Â
The game remained tied for the next ten minutes before a free position goal by Jamie Wallace kick-started four straight goals for the visitors, as they took a 5-1 lead into halftime. Sophomore Cori Holbrook scored two of her three goals in the game during the run.
Â
Fisher scored the first two goals of the second half to push its lead to 7-1 before Oneonta countered with a pair of unassisted goals of its own to cut the deficit back to four goals. Sophomore
Taylor Casey (Garden City South/Kellenberg Memorial) scored her ninth of the season while freshman
Danielle McIvor (Nanuet/Clarkstown) scored her fourth.
Â
Three unanswered goals by the Cardinals including a pair by Olivia Marziale opened up a seven-goal advantage with 11:44 remaining.
Â
Consecutive goals by freshman
Allison Butler (Queensbury/Queensbury), Cohen and senior
Rebecca Fildes (Red Hook/Red Hook) over a two-minute span gave Oneonta some life. The Red Dragons had a fourth goal waved off, which would have brought them to within three goals with plenty of time remaining.
Â
Fisher dashed any comeback hopes for Oneonta when Sierra Badger pumped in back-to-back goals for the final goals of the game for wither team.
Â
Freshman goalie
Jaclyn Marry (Long Beach/Long Beach) made 11 saves for Oneonta today while Hayley Peets registered a pair of saves for the Cardinals.
Â
Oneonta will play at Farmingdale this Saturday beginning at noon.
