Senior
Jack Dignan (Brewster/Brewster) scored a career high 24 points on a career best six three-pointers, but a late comeback for the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team came up short tonight against Plattsburgh 92-87. The loss for Oneonta dropped them to 12-7 overall and 7-5 in the SUNYAC while the Cardinals stayed atop the conference, moving to 11-1 and 16-3 overall.
Â
Joining Dignan in double figures in the contest were classmates
Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) (13) and
Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane) (10) and junior
Lawrence Coleman (Croton on the Hudson/Hendrick Hudson) (14). McElroy also collected 11 rebounds to lead Oneonta.
Â
Oneonta jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead in the first three minutes of the contest thanks to a pair of threes by Dignan. The Red Dragons continued to hold onto its lead and built it to as many as 12 points twice during the half.
Â
A 13-4 run over the final 5:48 by Plattsburgh pulled them to within three points at the break, as they trailed Oneonta 36-33. Kyle Richardson and Jonathan Patron combined for 14 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Cardinals in the first half. Richardson would finish with a game high 22 points to go with 12 boards while Patron would add 20 points and a game high 15 rebounds.
Â
Oneonta still held the lead 53-44 when Dignan buried a three at the 14:05 mark of the second half.
Â
The game turned in favor of Plattsburgh during the next six minutes when they put together a 20-2 run to grab a 64-55 lead.
Â
A layup by Richardson at the 2:03 mark gave the Cardinals an 80-70 lead, which looked insurmountable.
Â
The two teams would battle back and forth over the next minute with the Cardinals holding on to a nine point lead with 1:14 left to go.
Â
McElroy would jump start the final push for the Red Dragons with a pair of free throws, which was followed by an offensive rebound and a put back by Coleman to cut the deficit to five points with 44 seconds remaining.
Â
A jumper by junior
Grant Massaroni (Rotterdam/Mohonasen) was sandwiched between three free throws for Plattsburgh, which put its lead at six points with 31 seconds to go in the contest. Back-to-back threes by Dignan and Coleman brought Oneonta to within one point at 88-87 with 17 seconds remaining.
Â
After a pair of free throws by Eli Bryant, Dignan missed a potential game-tying three with five seconds left. Edward Correa made his two free throws to secure the win for Plattsburgh.
Â
Oneonta will be at Potsdam tomorrow afternoon for another SUNYAC contest beginning at 4pm.
