McElroy and Coleman lead men's basketball in Florida finale

Senior duo combine for 42 points in win against Brooklyn

The senior duo of Mickey McElroy and Lawrence Coleman (Croton on the Hudson/Hendrick Hudson) combined for 42 points tonight in leading the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team to a lopsided 87-62 victory against Brooklyn College.  The pair shot 18-of-26 from the floor and collected 16 rebounds, as the Red Dragons captured its fifth straight win to push its overall record to 6-4.

Trailing 6-5 at the 16:33 mark of the opening half, Oneonta used a 10-2 burst over the next 2:30 to grab a 15-8 lead.  McElroy and Coleman combined for eight of the 10 points during the run.

A jumper by freshman Kevin Mackin (Nanuet/Nanuet) gave Oneonta a 24-12 lead with just more than 10 minutes to go in the first half.  Brooklyn made a push over the next six minutes putting together a 12-4 run to close the gap back to 28-24.

The Red Dragons countered with an 11-4 run to close the half and take a 39-28 lead heading into intermission.

Oneonta continued to build on its lead doubling it to 25 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half.  The Red Dragons held its largest lead of 33 points in the waning minutes of the contest.

Joining McElroy and Coleman in double figures in tonight's game were Mackin and classmate Carson Jacobs (Buchanan/Hendrick Hudson) who finished with season highs of 11 points and 10 points respectively.

Statistically, Oneonta shot just under 50 percent while outrebounding the Bulldogs 55-30.  The Red Dragons also dished out 20 assists led by graduate student Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) who had eight.

Oneonta will open the new year with a non-league game at Williams College on Tuesday, Jan. 3.
