Men's basketball picks up win against Ursinus

Four Red Dragons in double figures

Four players scored in double figures today, as the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team picked up a 78-67 victory against Ursinus College in its opening game of the Land of Magic Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla.  The Red Dragons have now won four straight to push its overall record to a game above .500 at 5-4.
 
After trailing 2-0 early in the contest, Oneonta seized control with 13 unanswered points led by senior Lawrence Coleman (Croton on the Hudson/Hendrick Hudson) who scored 10 of his game high 19 points.  The Red Dragons shot an even 50 percent from the field in the opening half including 3-of-6 from behind the arc.
 
Ursinus (5-5) settled in and crept back into the game trailing 35-32 at the break.  The Bears shot 47 percent in the first half overall, but were 1-of-8 from long range.  Remi Janicot was the only player to reach double figures in the contest finishing with 11 points.
 
Oneonta put the game out of reach in the first 10 minutes of the second half outscoring Ursinus 23-7 to take a commanding lead of 58-39.  Leading the charge for the Red Dragons was the trio of graduate student Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) and seniors Jack Kolosky (Fishkill/Our Lady of Lourdes) and Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs).  The three combined for 21 of the 23 points during the outburst.  Kelly finished the game with 18 points, six rebounds and four assists.  Kolosky went for 11 points and eight boards while McElroy added 16 points.
 
Oneonta forced 18 turnovers that led to 19 points while also holding a decided advantage from the free throw line outscoring the Bears 26-9.
 
Oneonta will wrap up the two-day event tomorrow night with a game against Brooklyn College at 7pm.
