Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

McElroy scores 30, Men's basketball rolls past New Paltz

Senior Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) poured in 30 points today to lead the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team past New Paltz 88-72.  The win for the Red Dragons was its third straight and evens its overall record at 4-4 including a 3-1 mark in the SUNYAC.

For McElroy, it was the second of his career he has reached 30 points in a game.  The last time came two years ago versus New Paltz when he dropped a career best 32 points on them.  In the game, he converted 10 free throws, which ties his career mark set two years ago against Potsdam.

Classmates Lawrence Coleman (Croton on the Hudson/Hendrick Hudson) and Jack Kolosky (Fishkill/Our Lady of Lourdes) also reached double figures with 15 and 14 points respectively as did graduate student Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) who added 15 points and a team high six assists.  Coleman also collected 13 boards in the contest to record his third double double of the season.

Oneonta shot nearly 57 percent from the floor in today's game and outrebounded New Paltz (1-8, 0-4 SUNYAC) 40-25.  The Red Dragons dominated inside with 52 of their 88 points coming in the paint.

The two teams pretty much matched basket-for-basket through the first 10 minutes of the game.  New Paltz led for the last time at 17-16 before a three-pointer by freshman Kevin Mackin (Nanuet/Nanuet), a free throw by McElroy and a layup by Kelly put them ahead for good with 9:06 remaining in the opening half.  Oneonta maintained its cushion and took a 40-34 lead into intermission.

The Red Dragons stormed out of the locker room and, two minutes into the second half found themselves with a 13-point lead thanks to a 9-2 run.  Kelly capped the run with his only three of the contest.

Oneonta continued to build its lead for the remainder of the contest settling at the final margin of 16 points.

Oneonta will now have a couple of weeks before its next contest on Wednesday, Dec. 28 when they face Ursinus in its opening game of the Daytona Beach Shootout.
