The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team gave it all they had today battling the third-seeded SUNY Geneseo Knights to the end before coming up shy in its bid for a SUNYAC title with a heart-wrenching, 3-2 loss in overtime. The Red Dragons nearly pulled off its second upset in less than three days after knocking off top-seeded Cortland to advance to today's championship game. In the end, Oneonta didn't have an answer for Giovanna Fasanello, who scored all three goals for the Knights including the game winner in the 77th minute.
Â
Oneonta jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 24
th minute of the contest. Senior
Killeen Martin (Bay Shore/Bay Shore), who had just entered the game, scored her first goal of the season. Â The goal was assisted by sophomore
Allyson Wells (Niskayuna/Niskayuna), her second assist of the season. Wells made a nice play to strip a Geneseo defender of the ball on the right wing and centered a pass in front of the Knights goal where Martin scored on an eight-yard shot inside the left post.
Â
The Red Dragons took its lead into the break. Oneonta also outshot the Knights 7-3 in the first half and with five of the shots being on goal.
Â
The Knights came out of the gate slow allowing two penalty corners to the Red Dragons early before making a push down to its offensive end of the field. The Knights earned a penalty corner, and on the play a penalty stroke was awarded to the Knights. Fasanello successfully convert the penalty stroke for Geneseo, beating Oneonta goalie
Danell Jones (Whitney Point/Whitney Point) to her stick side to even the game at one goal apiece. Jones, starting her third straight game for Oneonta, finished with four saves
Â
The Red Dragons bounced right back less than two minutes later and found themselves with a goal advantage (2-1) thanks to senior
Anna Torri (Niskayuna/Niskayuna). Â Torri got off a shot after weaving through defenders for her second goal of the season.
Â
Still leading late in the game, the Knights found the equalizer in the 65
th minute. The goal would come off of a penalty corner, scored by Fasanello. She was assisted on the goal by Morgan Maley.
Â
The final five minutes were frantic with both sides trying to notch the game-winner. Oneonta had the only chance in the waning minutes when
Amanda Frayer (Harpursville/Harpursville) got a shot off that was saved by the Geneseo goalie. On the ensuing action, the Red Dragons earned a penalty corner, which generated a shot by
Sierra Palmatier (Nineveh/Afton Central) that was blocked.
Â
The game headed into the 7-v-7 sudden victory overtime. The Knights kept up the pressure earning multiple penalty corners before finally ending the game. Fasanello received a pass from Tess Necaise where she hit a shot as she was falling down into the back of the goal.
Â
Joining Frayer on the All-Tournament Team were
Nicole Johnston (Bedford Village/Fox Lane) and Alyson Bilow.
Â
Geneseo's victory earned them the automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament while Oneonta's season comes to a close with an overall record of 5-13.
