Binghamton, NY – The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis fall season ended today with a 5-0 loss to SUNY Geneseo in the semifinals of the SUNYAC tournament being held at the Binghamton Tennis Center. The Red Dragons completed the fall with a record of 11-4.
The weekend began when the Red Dragons delivered a quick knockout punch to the Brockport Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon. Senior
Alana Green (Pittsford/Pittsford) and freshman Jacqueline Guidice jumped out to a quick lead at first doubles and doubled up their opponents with a score of 8-4. Junior
Samantha Felice (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) and sophomore
Faith Haedrich (Islip/Islip) were overwhelming in their 8-1 victory. The third doubles team of senior
Kayla Houle (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy) and junior Kaitlin Ferrara were the lucky winners as their opponents defaulted and were credited with a victory and thereby securing a 3-0 lead for Oneonta after doubles.
Brockport was down 3-0 when singles play began and any hope of a comeback against the Red Dragons was thwarted when Guidice won at number two singles 6-2, 6-1. Houle finished at fifth singles when she took the match 6-0, 6-1 and then Brockport defaulted their sixth position. The final score for the Red Dragons was recorded as a 5-1 triumph and that victory clinched a semifinal berth. The Red Dragons then drew the defending SUNYAC champion SUNY Geneseo Knights.
In the match versus SUNY Geneseo the Red Dragons threw everything they had to try and dethrone the champs. However, the Red Dragons dropped the second and third doubles contests but the number one squad of Green and Guidice played a fantastic strategic match. The pair actually had three match points but could not get the elusive clincher and lost 9-8 (8-6) in a battle that lasted well over an hour.
With a deficit of 3-0 The Red Dragons tried to climb back into the match but when the third singles flight player sophomore
Michelle Halpern (Rye Brook/Blind Brook) played tough as did fourth singles Haedrich lost their matches the comeback failed. The Red Dragons sixth singles player Felice was on the verge of securing a point as she was up 6-2, 5-2 (40-15) when play was suspended. Green and Guidice were locked in tight battles at the number one and two positions respectfully, but because of the Knights clincher, play had to be halted and Geneseo advanced to the finals with a credited 5-0 win.
SUNY Oneonta will take some time off but will be back in action next spring when they open up their non-traditional season at William Smith on April 1
st at 12 noon at their campus.
