Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Shuts Out Potsdam to Complete Weekend Sweep

Junior Cory Santangelo nets pair of goals

The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team got a pair of goals from junior Cory Santangelo (Sayville/Sayville) today, as they defeated SUNY Potsdam 4-0 on the road.  The goals for Santangelo were his first two of the season, as he helped the Red Dragons extend their unbeaten streak to 11 games.  Oneonta (10-2-1, 5-0-1 SUNYAC) remains atop the conference standings with three games left to play in the SUNYAC.

"Fair play to Potsdam as they made the game harder than the score indicates," said Head Coach Iain Byrne.  "It was good to get Cory back this weekend.  His goals today were the difference."

Santangelo's first goal came in the waning minutes of the first half to give Oneonta a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.  The goal was assisted by senior Zachary Southworth (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy).

The final three goals for the Red Dragons came during a seven-minute stretch late in the second half, as they asserted control against Potsdam (6-4-2, 1-3-1 SUNYAC).

Senior Hans Purtell (Johnson City/Johnson City) started things in the 78th minute when he knocked home a rebound after a shot by sophomore Carlos Martinez (Brentwood/Brentwood) was saved by the Potsdam keeper.

Purtell figured in Oneonta's next goal less than three minutes later, as he assisted on Santangelo's second goal.

Martinez capped the scoring in the match in the 85th minute assisted by junior Austin Hughes (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa).

Freshman Ryan Wilson (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) made a pair of saves in the match to notch his third straight shutout.  Wilson is now 10-1-1 with seven shutouts.

Oneonta will continue its midseason road trip with a match at Ithaca College this coming Wednesday.  The match is scheduled for a 4pm kickoff.
