Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer too Strong for Ithaca College

ITHACA, N.Y. – Two goals in the opening 10 minutes of play were more than enough for the No. 7 SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team, as they handed the Ithaca College Bombers its first home loss of the season.  Three different players scored for the Red Dragons in the 3-1 win that extended its current unbeaten streak to 12 games.

"The two early goals put us in a strong position to go on and win the game," said Coach Iain Byrne.  "Ithaca never gave up though, and Patrick is starting to develop a nice team there."

The game's first goal came in just the fifth minute when senior Dillon Johnson (Northport/Northport) took advantage of a keeper that came out too far.  Johnson chipped the ball over the keeper's head where freshman Witman Hernandez (Huntington/Walt Whitman) buried a shot for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Five minutes later, junior Cory Santangelo (Sayville/Sayville) snatched up a loose ball in the box and fired a shot into the far corner of the goal to give Oneonta a two-goal lead.

The Red Dragons added a third goal before halftime when junior Brandon Arango (Ronkonkoma/Sachem North) headed a crossing pass from Luke Osovski (Endicott/Maine Endwell) into the back of the goal in the 32nd minute.

Trailing by three goals with nearly 13 minutes left before the halftime horn sounded, Ithaca had three chances to get on the board as Max Barish, Nathan Schoen and Alexander Brosnihan each unloaded a shot, but the Bombers were unable to find their mark and headed into the break facing an uphill climb.

Ithaca would breakthrough in the 66th minute after Sam Boylan struck a free kick, which eventually was kicked into an open net by Kevin Turi to bring the score to 3-1, but that was as close as the Bombers would get.

Zach Jacobsen played all 90 minutes in net for the Bombers and was saddled with the loss to drop to 5-6 on the season.  The Frederick, Md. native made two saves.

NSCAA Division III National Player of the Week, freshman Ryan Wilson (Poughkeepsie/Arlington), collected three saves to pick up his 11th win of the season.

Oneonta outshot Ithaca 21-13 in the match.  Five of the 21 shots were on frame for the Red Dragons while four were on goal for the Bombers.

Oneonta will play its final road game of the season this Saturday when they travel to New Paltz.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm.
