Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 22 Men's Soccer Shuts Out Plattsburgh

Freshman Hernandez nets a pair of goals

After a scoreless first half of play, the No. 22 ranked SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team exploded for three goals to take a 3-0 road victory today at Plattsburgh.  Freshman Witman Hernandez (Huntington/Walt Whitman) continues to impress in his rookie season, as he notched a pair of goals to lead the offense for Oneonta (9-2-1, 4-0-1 SUNYAC), who extended its unbeaten streak to 10 games.

"The wind was a big factor today," stated Head Coach Iain Byrne.  "We did great matching Plattsburgh in the first half going into the breeze and took advantage of it in the second.  Alejandro scored a wonder goal and the two freshmen continue to amaze."

Sophomore Alejandro Ruiz (Brentwood/Brentwood) ended the deadlock in the 52nd minute on a direct kick from outside the 18-yard box.

Ruiz assisted on Oneonta's next goal in the 65th minute.  On its only corner of the second half, freshman Justin Cebollero (Commack/Commack) sent a ball into the box that Ruiz was able to get to Hernandez, who finished the play with a shot into the corner of the goal.

The Red Dragons added to its lead in the waning minutes of the contest when the two rookies hooked up once again.  Cebollero was able to set a pass to Hernandez inside the 6-yard box where he finished it with a shot into the right corner of the goal.

Oneonta outshot Plattsburgh (9-3, 2-2 SUNYAC) 14-8 in the match.

Freshman keeper Ryan Wilson (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) only had to make one save today in picking up his ninth win and sixth shutout of the season.

Oneonta will play at SUNY Potsdam tomorrow beginning at 1pm.
