Volleyball takes down city rival Hartwick in four sets

The SUNY Oneonta women's volleyball team took down city rival Hartwick 3-1 tonight in the "battle for the hill" to improve to 6-11 while dropping Hartwick to 5-13. The Red Dragons are currently on a two match win streak and have won three out of its last four.

In the first set, the Red Dragons came out red hot scoring the first six points of the game including a lead off kill by senior Paige Carpluk (Yaphank/Bellport) all on classmate Jessica Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson)'s serve. The Red Dragons would take a 10-3 lead, causing Hartwick to call their first time out. Coming out of the timeout the Red Dragons would keep continue to put on the pressure advancing their lead to 13-5. Continuing to battle back and forth the score would advance to 18-10 before Hartwick would call a second timeout. The Red Dragons would go on to win the first set, 25-14.

After switching sides, Hartwick would capitalize on a Red Dragon error and score off their first serve to take a 2-0 lead. The Hawks would build on their lead causing the Red Dragons to call a timeout to regroup, 8-4. Coming out of the timeout the Red Dragons would take a 12-10 lead before the Hawks would call a timeout. The Red Dragons would grow their lead to 18-14 before Hartwick would call their second timeout. On the Hartwick serve with the score at 24-20, Carpluk would strike a ball beating two blockers to get the set ending kill (25-20).

In the third set, with a two match lead, the Red Dragons would come out strong taking a 6-2 lead. The Red Dragons would keep up the pace and bring their lead to 10-3. Hartwick would rally back off of senior Hannah Armstrong's serve to bring the score to 10-8, timeout called by Oneonta. Coming out of the timeout the Hawks would score a point, before the Red Dragons would regain the serve 11-9. With freshman Jessica Fowler (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) serving, the Dragons would rebuild their lead to 13-9. Hartwick would rally back take the lead 20-19 and Oneonta would call a timeout. Out of the timeout, Carpluk would win back the serve for Oneonta and tie the match at 20. Oneonta would score two more times to take a 22-20 and Hartwick would call a timeout. Hartwick would tie the game at 24 and a service error by Hartwick would give the ball to back to Oneonta with a 25-24 lead. After a long volley, Hartwick would take the final point, and the set 28-26.

Oneonta would open the set with the serve and the first point of the set. The set would play back and forth without either team pulling away tied at nine. Oneonta would find a grove with junior Melissa Voyer (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) serving, and they would take a 15-11 lead before a Hartwick timeout. Out of the timeout Hartwick would take back the serve and bring the score to 15-12. The Red Dragons put some distance between then Hawks by expanding their lead to 19-13 and on Fowlers serve Hartwick would call a timeout. Oneonta would continue to push forward and on the match point (24-16) off of Hartwicks serve, Voyer would seal the set and match victory on a kill assisted by Fowler.

The Red Dragons are back in action this weekend in SUNYAC play at Oswego State. The Red Dragons will take on Potsdam, Oswego and Fredonia in this weekend of pool play.
