Volleyball goes 2-1 in SUNYAC pool play as Coach Cashman earns 400th victory

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 The SUNY Oneonta women's volleyball team took two out of three matches in SUNYAC pool play at Oswego this weekend to improve their conference record to 4-2 and its overall record to 8-12. The Red Dragons won their first match on Friday over Potsdam 3-2, and then dropped the first match on Saturday Oswego 0-3, before bouncing back to beat Fredonia 3-2.

In the match against Potsdam, the Red Dragons would fall in a two set hole. Determined to earn the victory the Red Dragons would battle back to take the victory 3-2. For the Red Dragons, junior Melissa Voyer (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) had 14 kills and eight blocks. Senior Jessica Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) had 26 assists and freshman Lindsay Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) had a match high 29 digs.

In the second match of pool play, the Red Dragons were swept by Oswego 0-3. In the match for the Red Dragons J.Pelaccio would lead the Red Dragons with two service aces, 15 assists and 11 digs.

With a short turn around on Saturday, the Red Dragons would take on Fredonia shortly after finishing their match with Oswego. The Red Dragons would come out of the gate sluggish dropping the first two sets of the match.

The Red Dragons would find it in the third set, and ride that momentum to a 3-2 victory over the Blue Devils. Senior Paige Carpluk (Yaphank/Bellport) filled up the stats sheet with 15 kills, two service aces, three blocks, three assists and 16 digs. Junior Sara Feldman (Smithtown/Smithtown East) was switched to the libero position from her normal position of outside hitter, with this move Feldman helped turn the match around. She would go on to led the team in digs with 25, and senior Kassidy Kievit (Cincinnatus/Cincinnatus Central) had five blocks.

With the two victories this weekend, Coach Colleen Cashman reached 400 victories as a head coach. In her 20th year as a head coach, including her 18th with Oneonta, she has an impressive 400-353 record.

The Red Dragons are back in action against MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts on October 14 at 6:00pm.
