Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Coleman pours in 33 as men's basketball defeats Brockport

Junior forward Lawrence Coleman (Croton on the Hudson/Hendrick Hudson) poured in a career high 33 points including a career best 14 free throws in leading the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team to a 78-68 win at Brockport today.  Coleman bested his previous career mark set earlier this season when he scored 32 points in a victory against Hartwick College.  The Red Dragons are now 9-3 overall while improving to 4-1 in the SUNYAC.

Trailing 63-57 with 6:51 remaining in the game, the Red Dragons closed the game with a 21-5 run to take the victory.  Coleman scored the final 14 points for Oneonta and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the line during the final run.  Coleman's other two baskets were three-pointers, as he was 3-of-5 from behind the arc in the game.

Oneonta trailed at halftime 35-30 and a layup by senior Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane) at the 17:19 mark of the second half gave Oneonta it's first lead since 2-0.

Brockport (6-4/1-2 SUNYAC) ran off 10 unanswered to grab a 50-43 lead before Oneonta countered with an 8-0 run of its own to regain a 51-50 lead with just less than 15 minutes to go.  Senior Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) scored six points during the run and scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half.

The two teams then took turns with the lead before Brockport pushed ahead 63-57 prior to Oneonta's game-ending run.

The Golden Eagles broke out early in the first half, grabbing a 14-3 lead in the opening six minutes of the game.

Oneonta trailed 27-12 with less than eight minutes to go in the first half before ripping off 10 unanswered points to cut its deficit to 27-22.  The run was capped by a three-pointer by junior Grant Massaroni (Rotterdam/Mohonasen), who finished with six points today in 17 minutes of action.

The biggest difference in today's game was Oneonta's 24-12 advantage from the free throw line.  The Red Dragons converted 24-32 from the charity stripe while the hosts were 12-20.  Oneonta also finished the game shooting 44 percent from the floor including 58 percent in the second half.

Oneonta will travel to New Paltz on Friday night to face the Hawks beginning at 7:30pm.
