Men's basketball upended by Buffalo State 82-73

Despite shooting 67 percent in the opening half tonight the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team was upended by the Buffalo State Bengals, 82-73, in SUNYAC action.  Buffalo State (11-5/5-4 SUNYAC) outscored Oneonta (10-4/5-2 SUNYAC) 42-29 in the second half to erase a first half deficit to leave town with the victory.
 
Four players were in double figures for Oneonta led by sophomore Ian Schupp (New Hampton/Goshen), who came off the bench to score a season high 19 points in only 22 minutes.  Schupp made 7-of-14 shots including 3-of-5 from behind the arc.
 
Seniors Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) and Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane) along with junior Lawrence Coleman (Croton on the Hudson/Hendrick Hudson) each scored 12 points for the Red Dragons.
 
The Bengals were led by Jordon Glover's 21 points while Nico McLean and Lovell Smith added 18 and 15 points respectively.  McLean also grabbed game high 10 rebounds.
 
With the score tied at 16 apiece, Oneonta put together a 13-3 run to take a 29-19 lead with just over eight minutes to go in the first half.  Schupp and junior Grant Massaroni (Rotterdam/Mohonasen) combined for 11 of the 13 points during the run.
 
The Red Dragons took a comfortable 44-35 lead into halftime.
 
The Bengals began to cut into Oneonta's lead from the beginning of the second half.  A layup by Smith at the 12:22 mark of the half gave the Bengals its first lead since early in the opening half at 55-54.
 
The Red Dragons countered with nine unanswered points to grab the lead back with just over 11 minutes remaining.  Schupp and McElroy combined to score all nine points.
 
The Bengals then put together a 13-1 run over the next five minutes to grab a 68-64 lead.  McLean capped the run with a layup.
 
Oneonta would tie the game one last time at 68 apiece with 2:33 left in the game before Buffalo State scored back-to-back layups to get the lead back, as they pulled away in the final minute of the contest.  The Bengals were a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line down the stretch.
 
Oneonta will play host to Fredonia tomorrow afternoon in the Dewar Arena beginning at 4pm.
