Volleyball goes 2-1 at Springfield Invitational

Allyson Coniglione named to All-Tournament Team

The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team won a pair of matches today on the final day of the Springfield College Invitational.  The Red Dragons took down both Bridgewater State University and Emmanuel College to run its season record to 3-1 at the end of the opening week of 2015.  Senior Allyson Coniglione (Glenville/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) was selected to the All-Tournament Team for her performance during the two-day event.

Bridgewater vs Oneonta
Oneonta overcame a 2-1 deficit before defeating the Bears in five sets.  The Red Dragons went on a 7-1 run to win the first set 25-16.  During this run Coniglione had two aces. The Red Dragons dropped the second set on a late six point run by Bridgewater; the key to this run was Bridgewater's Samantha Fasoli services, which included a service ace. Bridgewater would take the third set in a dog fight. Then, with the Red Dragons down 2-1, they bounced back in the fourth set to even the series at 2-2. With momentum on their side, the Red Dragons crushed Bridgewater in the final set 15-4.

Red Dragons point leader for this game was senior Jill Darpino (Endicott/Union Endicott). She led the team with 16 points, which included 14 kills. Jessica Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) (26) and Karly Greco (East Patchogue/Bellport) (23) combined for 49 assists in the match.

Emmanuel vs Oneonta
Oneonta had an easier time of it in defeating Emmanuel College squad in just four sets, 3-1. Oneonta won the first set 25-16, the turning point for this set came when Erin Avery (Harpursville/Harpursville) came up to serve, with the scored tied 14-14. The Red Dragons went on a 5-0 run that was largely aided by Gabrielle Eppolito (Hamburg/Hamburg)'s two kills. In the second set, with the scored tied at 5-5, the Red Dragons went on a 7-0 run to put the game far out of reach for the Saints. The Red Dragons dropped the third set to the Saints in a back and forth battle that ended with the Saints on top 25-23. With the match score 2-1, the Red Dragons bounced back in the fourth set to win the match. The score was 11-8 when Coniglione led the Red Dragons to victory with her serves, pacing an 8-0 run. This stretch put the game out of reach and sealed the win for the Red Dragons 25-13.

Melissa Voyer (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) had 15 points, including 10 kills. Eppolito led the Red Dragons in kills with 13.

Last night, Oneonta was swept by the hosts. Darpino and Erika Corbin (Kirkwood/Windsor) each registered eight kills, while Pelaccio recorded 14 assists.  Paige Carpluk (Yaphank/Bellport) led the squad with eight digs, as the Red Dragons hit just .083 in the loss.

The Red Dragons surged ahead early, 4-2 in the opening set, until Springfield put together an 9-1 run.  The lead grew to 15-8 until the Red Dragons battled back to within 15-11.  Springfield answered back with a 6-2 push and Springfield won the first set 25-17.

In the second set Oneonta and Springfield were knotted at six apiece, when Springfield went on a 5-0 sprint to open up the set. Springfield went on to win the set 25-15.

Taking an early 6-4 lead in the third set, Springfield put together a 7-3 run to take a three-point lead at 11-8. Oneonta would not go down easy though, as they rallied to take a 16-14 lead. The Springfield Pride would not go away, evening things at 17.  The Pride continued its momentum as a service ace put the Pride on top to stay, 23-20, ending in a 25-21 victory.
