The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team hosted and finished 1-2 this weekend in SUNYAC pool play. Senior
Jill Darpino (Endicott/Union Endicott) had 39 kills in the three matches while both
Allyson Coniglione (Glenville/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and
Karly Greco (East Patchogue/Bellport) eclipsed milestones. Coniglione collected 69 digs to surpass 1000
while Greco recorded her 1000
th career assist. Senior
Hannah O'Neil (Brookhaven/Bellport) had a big weekend adding 22 kills and scoring 23 points for the Red Dragons.
Oneonta vs CortlandOneonta lone win for the weekend came in its final match today against rival Cortland in a thriller. Oneonta couldn't get anything going in the first set falling 25-18. Oneonta would bounce right back and take the second set 25-17. Oneonta's momentum carried over to the third set and they took an early 8-4 lead. Cortland would chip away at the lead until they tied it at 23 apiece. From there, with the momentum swung to Cortland and they would battle to win the set 27-25. Oneonta would did deep in the fourth set if they were going to force a fifth and deciding set. Paced by sophomore
Melissa Voyer (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and Darpino, Oneonta would stave off a late comeback in the set to win 25-22.
In the fifth set, Cortland would go up 3-0 eaerly. Oneonta answered back with five points of their own to make the score 5-3. The two teams went back-and-forth until Oneonta's long volley win put them up 14-13 before ending the match with a block.
Oneonta vs OswegoOneonta came out sharp in the first set against Oswego. They grabbed an early 9-4 lead but Oswego was not going down without a fight. Oswego rallied to close the gap to only two points (16-14), but Oneonta fought back and took the first set 25-21. In the second set Oswego and Oneonta would battle back-and-forth for the entire match. Both teams were on each other's heels until the score became tied at 19. Oswego would make a final push and pull away from the Red Dragons 25-21. In the third set Oswego forged ahead late in the game to win the set 25-20 before closing out the match with a 25-18 win in the fourth set.
Oneonta vs BrockportLast night against Brockport, Oneonta got off to a slow start in the first set, but would rally to tie the score at 19-19. After a long battle Oneonta would take the point, to go up 20-19. Brockport then called a timeout to change the momentum of the match and ended up winning the first set 25-22. In the second set, Oneonta would find themselves in a 12-3 hole. They would rally back to 14-9, but the Brockport offense would prevail for a 25-16 win. In the third set, Oneonta and Brockport would battle back in forth with lead changes the entire match with neither team having more than a three point led the entire set. Unfortunately for Oneonta, Brockport would win this set and the match.
Oneonta will be back in action Tuesday, September 29
th against the Scranton Royals in Scranton, PA.
