Brooklyn, NY - The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team headed down to Brooklyn, NY to play the Pratt Institute Cannoneers for the first time in many years. The Red Dragons kept its momentum from its biggest win of the season on Thursday over Cortland and quickly dispatched the Cannoneers with a 9-0 blanking. The victory pushed the Red Dragons to 4-5 overall.
Teaming up at number two doubles for the first time this season was sophomore
Samantha Felice (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) and senior
Samantha Butcher (Sidney/Sidney Central). The pair went down 1-2 in the match in the early going but quickly recovered and won the next seven games clinching the doubles bout 8-2. Freshman
Faith Haedrich (Islip/Islip) and freshman Aubrey Hodnett playing together for only the second time at the number three doubles slot in as many days were never threatened and shutout their opponents 8-0.
In singles play, the Red Dragon women were very efficient as they only dropped four games total in the dismantling of the Cannoneers lineup. The highlight of the afternoon was Haedrich seeing her first singles action of the season and showing incredible promise winning 6-0, 6-0 making her day at Pratt a complete shutout of her opponents as she never lost a game combining her doubles and singles play. Freshman
Erin Tully (Hampton bays/Hampton Bays) took to the courts at sixth singles in her Red Dragon debut and was overwhelmingly successful as she triumphed 6-1, 6-1 recording her first Red Dragon and collegiate win. Freshman
Gabriella Dybas (Amsterdam /Amsterdam), filling in at the fifth singles spot, was unblemished in her match as she was a 6-0, 6-0 conqueror recording her second career singles win.
The women will welcome the SUNY Farmingdale Rams to the campus on Sunday, September 27th at 1 PM and play a crucial match vs. their rivals from downstate. The Red Dragons hope to get to .500 on the season and secure its third win in a row. Farmingdale has only two losses on the season and the Red Dragons will have its work cut out for them as they try to avenge last year's loss to the Rams in Farmingdale. Sundays match will also take place on family weekend at SUNY Oneonta and a good crowd of supporters are expected to attend at the Dr. Heissan Tennis Courts.
