Women's tennis falls to Farmingdale in marathon match

Up 2-1 after the doubles Red Dragons can't hold on to lead

Oneonta, NY - The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis squad were back in action at home at the Dr. Heissan Tennis Courts to take on the 6-2 and Skyline Conference leader Farmingdale Rams today.  The Red Dragons were trying to get to .500 and its third win in a row and stop the Rams' three-game winning streak.  After four hours of tennis the match ended in the Rams favor 6-3.

The doubles started off giving every indication of the long afternoon ahead.  The number one tandem of senior Michelle Spencer (Homer/Homer) and junior Alana Green (Pittsford/Pittsford) went ahead in their match taking quick control going up 4-0.  However, the Rams duo crept back into the match and won eight of the next 10 games and the bout 8-6.  The number two doubles pair of senior Samantha Butcher (Sidney/Sidney Central) and junior Christine Santarsiero (Rye Brook/Blind Brook) were down 3-6 in the match but battled back to take the encounter by a score of 9-7.  The freshman pair of Aubrey Hodnett and Faith Haedrich (Islip/Islip) won their third match in a row since being teamed together and took their match dominating the net and won 8-3.

With the Red Dragons up 2-1 going into the singles, the Rams battled back winning at one-five singles and clinched the dual match.  Hodnett continued to dominate at No. 6 singles, picking up her fifth win of the season with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph for the Red Dragons' lone point in the singles stanza.  Green and Spencer, at numbers one and two singles respectfully, played tough as their matches each lasted 2 1/2 hours. Green played gritty tennis but eventually bowed in straight sets 4-6, 5-7.   Spencer played also with great heart but lost in three sets 6-3, 0-6, 5-7.

The Red Dragons will try once again to get within one match of .500 and play their community rivals Hartwick Hawks, who are currently on an eight game winning streak themselves.  That match is scheduled for Wednesday, September 30th at 4 PM on the campus of Hartwick College.
