Oneonta, NY - The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team returned home to play their third match in a row in as many days while looking for their second win in a row but came up just short today.  The University of Scranton women's tennis team came in to town looking for their fourth win in a row and barely escaped Oneonta with that victory. 
 
The Red Dragon women went down 0-3 after the doubles stanza of competition and gave the visiting Royals tennis doubles tandem's quite a scare in every contest.  Senior Michelle Spencer (Homer/Homer) and sophomore Alana Green (Pittsford/Pittsford) went down 7-9 at number one doubles.  The second doubles team of senior Samantha Butcher (Sidney/Sidney Central) and junior Christine Santarsiero (Rye Brook/Blind Brook) went the distance in their match but succumbed in the tiebreaker 2-7.  At third doubles the Red Dragons could not get that all important clinching game and also fell in a close match 6-8.  These three very tough losses in doubles put Oneonta in a hole that was just too deep to dig out of and this really proved to be the difference.
 
In singles both Butcher and freshman Audrey Hodnett found victories at numbers four and six respectfully, but this was not enough to turn the tide as Scranton clinched wins at number two and five singles and with those triumphs clinched dual match supremacy by a score of 5-2.  The rains came and the other matches in progress were suspended and the competition was eventually called with the Scranton women leaving town with a tough fought win.
 
The women's tennis team will have two full days to lick their wounds and head to the road to take on the very strong defending SUNYAC Champions SUNY Geneseo.  That match will take place on Tuesday, Sept 22nd at 4 PM on the campus of SUNY Geneseo.
