Junior
Anthony Passiatore (South Setauket/Ward Melville) scored in the 89
th minute to break a one all tie and lift the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team to a 2-1 road victory against No. 9 Montclair State. The victory for the Red Dragons snapped a mini three-game winless streak and raised its overall record to 4-2-1. The loss for the Red Hawks, which snapped a 48-game home unbeaten streak, was its first of the season, as they fall to 6-1 overall.
The game winner was assisted by sophomore
Brandon Arango (Ronkonkoma/Sachem North), who sent the ball back to Passiatore who was at the top right corner inside the box. Passiatore then sent a shot that made it through the keeper's hands and into the goal.
After the two teams battled to a 1-1 score through the first 45 minutes, Oneonta asserted itself in the second half, outshooting the hosts, 10-5, and finishing the match with a 16-10 advantage.
Montclair scored the game's first goal in the 12
th minute by Matt Hendrickson with an assist by Rafael Terci. It was Hendrickson's second goal of season. The Red Hawks nearly added another with three more shots during the next seven minutes, but senior goalie
Vincent Pellegrino (Baldwin/Baldwin) came up with a pair of saves to keep the score where it was.
Senior
Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee) got Oneonta even in the 19
th minute with his third goal of the year. He was assisted by junior
Hans Purtell (Johnson City/Johnson City).
Pellegrino finished the game with five saves as did his counterpart Mike Saalfrank.
"This was our best performance of the year against a great team," said Coach
Iain Byrne. "This win sets us up nicely for the start of conference play next weekend."
Oneonta will begin its SUNYAC schedule on the road next weekend at Oswego and Cortland. The Red Dragons will face Oswego on Friday afternoon beginning at 3pm while they will battle rival Cortland on Saturday at 1pm.
