The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team fell today, 9-0, to the Hamilton Continentals in its home opener.
 
In doubles action, the second and third flight were lost by lopsided scores, but the number one doubles team of sophomore Alana Green (Pittsford/Pittsford) and senior Michelle Spencer (Homer/Homer) kept things close.  Tied at 4-4, they were broken and could not recover and lost the next three games going down 8-4.
 
Down in an 0-3 hole after the doubles, the Red Dragons dropped all singles matches to complete the shutout by the Continentals to put a damper on the home opener.  There were some bright signs for the squad when Green, playing in the number one position, changed her strategy by slowing the pace down in the second set to get to 3-4.  However she dropped two out of the next three games and went down 2-6, 4-6.

Spencer was competitive at the number two position but could not get over the hump and lost 2-6, 2-6.  The other noteworthy match took place at the number four position where senior Samantha Butcher (Sidney/Sidney Central) went ahead 4-0 in the opening set, but her opponent came back and Butcher dropped the set and ultimately the match 5-7, 1-6.
 
It was the third loss in a row for the Red Dragons, but they hope to get back on the winning track when they travel to Oswego on Friday for a match that begins at 4pm.
