Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Fioretti Scores 100th Career Goal in Win Over New Paltz

Higgins registers first career score

April 21, 2015

The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team opened the final week of the regular season with a dominant 22-13 win over New Paltz Tuesday afternoon. Rookie Taylor Casey (Garden City South/Kellenberg Memorial) recorded seven goals while senior Nikki Fioretti (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown)'s six scores were highlighted with her 100th career tally.

After allowing the game's first goal just 20 seconds in, Casey opened a six goal run with an individual effort at 1:08, Fioretti tacked on the second goal less than an minute later on an unassisted goal.

Sophomore Katie Flannery (Massapequa/Plainedge) picked up her first of six assists by feeding senior Jillian Donodeo (Holbrook/Sachem East) at 3:38, before scoring herself at 4:20. Senior Nicole Boylan (Massapequa/Massapequa) and sophomore Heather Fitzpatrick (Plainview/Plainview JFK) finished of the spurt each with a goal.

The teams alternated the next four goals to bring the score to 8-4 before New Paltz scored three goals in three minutes to lower its deficit to three, but that's as close as they would get.

Oneonta made another surge scoring five in nine minutes. Casey netted a pair while Fioretti, Donodeo and Boylan each picked up a goal. New Paltz scored one more to post a 13-7 Red Dragon lead at the half.

The Hawks scored early again in the second half, but Casey would have no parts of it. The frosh netted back-to-back goals in just over a minute span. The sequence repeated as the Hawks scored at 4:41 of the second stanza before Fioretti replied with two more to put the Red Dragons up by a score of 17-9.

Eight minutes later, after a trading of goals, junior Catherine Clark (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) started Oneonta's final surge burying a feed from Donodeo to bring the score to 19-11.

Fioretti lined  up for a free position attempt at 17:08 rifling the shot past the keeper for her 100th career goal. Casey tacked on her team-leading 60th tally at 17:31.

Rookie Katelyn Higgins (Colonie/South Colonie Central) notched her first career goal to finish the game at 28:30.

Oneonta moves to 7-9 (4-3 SUNYAC) heading into the regular season finale with #19Geneseo on Saturday. Prior to the 12:00pm contest, the team will be recognizing its seniors.
