Rochester, NY – Perfect weather and tennis conditions welcomed the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragon women for a match on the campus of RIT.  The dual match that ensued was compelling and dramatic but the SUNY Oneonta women had to settle for a 4-5 setback.

The Red Dragons fell behind after the doubles competition 1-2 with the lone triumph coming from junior Michelle Spencer (Homer/Homer) and senior Brynn Sussman (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) coming back from 2-6 to clinch the number one position 9-7.

The RIT Tigers held a 1-2 advantage going into the singles stanza.  In her victory at first singles, Sussman set the mark for the most singles wins in the last 16 years.  Her match was tight in the first set but she held on and won the contest 7-5, 6-2.  Senior Kelly Gochan (Lake Grove/Sachem North) won at second singles after a tight first set and then raised the level of her play pulling out a 6-4, 6-0 decision.   Third singles player Spencer lost her first set but showed plenty of grit fighting back in the second set getting it to a tiebreaker but bowed out with a 0-6, 6-7 loss in a test of wills shown by both opponents.  One of the highlights of the afternoon came at fifth singles when junior Samantha Butcher (Sidney/Sidney Central) took on former Red Dragon women Riane Reithel.  The combatants split the first two sets but Butcher dominated the third set and won a compelling match 7-5, 2-6, 6-1.  The RIT Tigers held on though to clinch the dual match as they won at number four and six singles.

The Red Dragons head back to the road on Wednesday, April 15^th to play Bard College at 4:30 PM.
