Troy, N.Y. – The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team opened the 2015 season Thursday afternoon at RPI. The Red Dragons fell in the contest by a score of 12-8.
After getting behind 1-0 just under 10 seconds in, junior
Catherine Clark (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) knotted the game at one at the just over a minute in taking a feed from rookie
Taylor Casey (Garden City South/Kellenberg Memorial). The Red and White took a 2-1 with 23:38 remaining in the first half when Clark met twine off a pass from senior
Nicole Boylan (Massapequa/Massapequa).
With 14:45 remaining in the opening stanza, Casey registered her first career goal. The unassisted tally lifted the Red and White back to a one goal lead at 3-2.
The teams went to the half with the scoreboard showing 9-3 in favor of the hosts. Clark and Casey led the Red Dragons attack with a pair of shots on goal apiece with senior
Nikki Fioretti (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) firing one of her own. On the defensive side, senior
Marissa Makar (Yorktown/Yorktown) forced a trio of turnovers and freshman goalkeeper
Autumn Moore (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) made three saves.
Senior
Jillian Donodeo (Holbrook/Sachem East) opened the Red Dragons' scoring in the second half pocketing her first tally with 21:21 left in the half. Rookie
Jaime Morris (West Nyack/Clarkstown South) got in on the action, registering her first career point when she buried a free position shot with just over 18 minutes remaining.
Nine minutes later Donodeo pulled the Red and White within five with on an unassisted effort. The fight continued for Oneonta as Clark tallied her third goal of the day on a feed from Donodeo to pull the score to an 11-7 deficit with 4:47 left on the clock.
RPI came up with an answer at the four-minute mark, which was quickly responded to by Oneonta. Casey and Norris combined on a man-down goal to pull the contest beck within four with Casey posting her second goal of the afternoon with two and a half minute left.
The Red Dragons controlled the vast majority of the second frame outscoring the Engineers 5-3, while firing seven more shots than the opponent. Donodeo and Casey were at the forefront of the Red and White attack each rifling five shots on target, while Boylan and Clark threw a trio of balls on goal.
Moore recorded six saves in her first collegiate start on 23 shots from RPI.
The Red Dragons head to the National Training Center in Clermont, Fl. to take on current #3Gettysburg on Tuesday. After traveling to current #17St. John Fisher on next Friday, Oneonta will host Scranton on March 14.
