Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's lacrosse nipped by St. John Fisher in overtime

Freshman Taylor Casey leads attack with four goals

The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team battled St. John Fisher today for 66 minutes, but fell 11-10 in overtime.  Freshman Taylor Casey (Garden City South/Kellenberg Memorial) continued her strong start to her rookie season with four more goals and one assist to lead the attack for the Red Dragons.  Senior Jillian Donodeo (Holbrook/Sachem East) added three goals and one assist.

Trailing 10-8 with 1:48 left in regulation, Casey punched home a free position goal before freshman Jaime Morris (West Nyack/Clarkstown South) scored the equalizer with 45 seconds remaining.  Casey controlled the ensuing draw, but couldn't convert a game-winner and the game headed to overtime.

In overtime, Jordan Johnson scored the eventual game-winning goal with just one minute left in the first of two, three-minute, sections of overtime.  Donodeo had an attempt as time expired in the first half of overtime, but was thwarted by Cardinals' goalie Molly Maguire.

Donodeo got things started for Oneonta (0-3) just 53 seconds into the contest with an unassisted goal.  St. John Fisher countered with three unanswered including a pair by Jordan Johnson.

The two teams took turns exchanging goals during a five-minute stretch where the Cardinals maintained its two-goal lead at 5-3 with 10:35 to go in the opening half of play.  Casey and Donodeo connected on back-to-back goals to knot the game at five apiece.  Donodeo's goal came on a free position shot at the 1:24 mark.  The two teams would remain tied heading into the break.

Three different players scored for St. John Fisher in the first seven minutes of the second half, as they created some breathing room early.

Casey and junior Catherine Clark (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) each scored less than one minute apart to pull Oneonta back to within one goal at 8-7 with just under 18 minutes left in regulation.

St. John Fisher went ahead 9-7 and 10-8 before the late-game heroics by Casey and Morris.

Oneonta will not have much time to rest, as they will take on Scranton tomorrow in its home opener beginning at 1pm.
