Wrestling breezes past RIT to end dual meet season

Freshman James Bethel records 32nd win of the season

The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team closed its dual-meet season in dominating fashion today, as they easily defeat visiting RIT 40-12.  With the victory, Oneonta finished with an overall record of 9-10 while RIT falls to 6-10.
 
After receiving three forfeits to start the match, RIT's Brad Mayville pinned Nicholas Heck (West Pittston, PA/Wyoming Area) to put the Tigers on the scoreboard.
 
Junior Evan Wallace (East Greenbush/Columbia) came right back and pinned Won Kim in 4:09 to give Oneonta a 24-6 advantage.
 
RIT won the next two weight classes by decision to cut the Red Dragons lead to 24-12.
 
Oneonta closed the match with a major decision junior Vincent Provenzano (Islip/Islip) and pins by senior Chad Obzud (Cohoes/Lansingburgh) and freshman James Bethel (Saugerties/Saugerties).  For Bethel, it was his team-leading 18th pin of the season and team-leading 32nd win of the season.  Bethel is currently ranked in the ninth nationally in Division III while being second with his 19 pins.
 
Oneonta will now prepare for the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championship at Roger Williams University of Feb. 28-Mar. 1.  The top-3 finishers in each of the 10 weight classes will qualify for the NCAA Championships on Mar. 13-14 in Hershey, PA.
