Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball drops pair of weekend road games

The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team traveled to the Rochester area for a pair of weekend SUNYAC games and came away empty handed, as they fell to both Brockport and SUNY Geneseo.  Today, they fell to Geneseo, 87-67, while last night they were edged by Brockport 56-52.

In today's game, Geneseo (14-8, 10-5 SUNYAC) raced out to a 46-32 lead at halftime on the strength of shooting nearly 60 percent from the floor.  The hosts never trailed in the game and closed the final 10 minutes of the first half outscoring Oneonta (11-12, 8-8 SUNYAC) 28-14.

Three players scored in double figures today for the Red Dragons led by senior Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) who scored 18 points.  Sophomore Lawrence Coleman (Croton on the Hudson/Hendrick Hudson) added 17 points while junior Jack Dignan (Brewster/Brewster) scored 12 points off the bench.  Coleman also collected a team high six rebounds and two blocks.

In last night's game, Brockport jumped out to an early 8-0 lead before Oneonta settled into the contest.  A 9-3 spurt by the Red Dragons over the final eight minutes of the first half brought them to within one point at 22-21 at halftime.

A Pair of free throws by senior Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) gave Oneonta its only lead of the game, 42-41, with 5:54 remaining in the game.  On the ensuing possession, Brockport canned a three to regain the lead.

A pair of free throws by Coleman brought Oneonta to within one point with 1:39 to go.  The Red Dragons still trailed, 53-52, with 17 seconds left.  The Red Dragons missed a pair of three-pointers on back-to-back possessions and Geneseo converted three free throws for the final margin of victory.

Junior Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) led Oneonta with 17 points to go with a team high nine boards.  Coleman scored 13 points and Kelly finished with 11 points.

Oneonta will close out the regular season at home next weekend when they host Fredonia and Buffalo State on Friday and Saturday.  The Red Dragons are still in the mix for the conference tournament with tiebreakers against Cortland and New Paltz who are battling for the final spots.  The top six teams qualify and the first round is Tuesday, Feb. 24.
