SUNY Oneonta senior
Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) ran down the clock and then hit the game-winning layup with two seconds left in the game to lift the Red Dragons to an exhilarating, 84-82, victory tonight against Fredonia. Oneonta (12-12, 9-8 SUNYAC) scored the final four points of the contest, as they trailed the Blue Devils by a bucket with 1:09 remaining. The victory for Oneonta keeps them in the hunt for the final playoff spot, as a win tomorrow at home against Buffalo State will put them into the SUNYAC tournament.
Â
Kelly was one of four players in double figures tonight with 16 points to go with 10 assists. The Red Dragons were led by senior
Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) who scored 22 points for the game while making history in the first half.
Â
At the 16:45 mark of the opening half Mager, as only he would, touched nothing but net on a three-pointer to set the all-time scoring mark for men's basketball. He broke the mark that was set almost 26 years to the day by John Fleming '89. Fleming played his last game for the Red Dragons on Feb. 24, 1989 and, at the time set the career mark of 1,418 points. The trey for Mager gave him 1,420 points to break the record.
Â
Joining Kelly and Mager in double figures was junior
Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) and sophomore
Lawrence Coleman (Croton on the Hudson/Hendrick Hudson), as they added 15 and 13 points respectively.
Â
A basket by Coleman at 18:53 of the second half gave Oneonta its largest lead at 52-43. Fredonia countered with a 13-3 run to regain the lead, 56-55, on a basket by Max Pearce. Pearce finished the game with 14 points, as six Blue Devils scored in double figures tonight.
Â
A pair of free throws by Mager at the 7:44 mark gave the Red Dragons a 66-65 lead. Oneonta would build its lead to 76-70 after junior
Jack Dignan (Brewster/Brewster) drained a three ball.
Â
A 10-2 run capped by a layup by sophomore Ian Helps gave the Blue Devils an 80-78 advantage with 2:08 remaining.
Â
Fredonia scored the game's first six points before Oneonta got on track. The Red Dragons went on a 13-2 run, capped by another three by Mager to grab a 13-8 lead with just over 15 minutes remaining in the opening half.
Â
The Blue Devils continue to stay red hot, as they shot over 70 percent for most of the first half. A Luke Hennessy jumper capped a 9-2 spurt to give them the lead back at 20-15 three minutes later.
Â
Fredonia continued to lead until a three-pointer by sophomore
Lawrence Coleman (Croton on the Hudson/Hendrick Hudson) gave Oneonta a 32-31 lead with a little more than six minutes to go. Another eight unanswered over the next two minutes gave the Red Dragons a comfortable 40-33 lead. Oneonta took a 48-43 advantage into halftime.
Â
Fredonia finished the game shooting 54 percent while Oneonta shot 48 percent. The Red Dragons made 9-of-21 from behind the arc while converting 21-of-31 free throws.
