Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer dominates SUNY Potsdam for fifth straight win

Sophomore Santangelo nets a pair

Sophomore Cory Santangelo (Sayville/Sayville) netted a pair of goals today in leading the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team to a total dominance of visiting SUNY Potsdam in SUNYAC men's action.  The goals for Santangelo were his first of the season after leading the Red Dragons last fall as a rookie with 14.

With the victory, Oneonta (9-2-1/5-0 SUNYAC) captured its fifth straight win including its fourth consecutive via the shutout.  The Red Dragons are well out in front in the conference and will host second place Plattsburgh tomorrow at 1pm on Red Dragon Field.  Plattsburgh, who comes to town ranked No. 14 in the latest NSCAA Coaches' poll, defeated New Paltz today 5-1.

Oneonta wasted no time again today to go in front, as Santangelo scored his first of the match in the tenth minute.  He converted a crossing pass into the box by senior Matthew Matteo (Millerton/Webutuck) from the right flank.  Santangelo finished the cross off with a hard header to the back of the goal.

The Red Dragons took its one-goal lead and 10-0 shot advantage into halftime.

Oneonta made it 2-0 in the 60th minute on a goal by senior Alex Winiarski (Great Neck/St. Anthony's).  Winiarski finished off a corner kick service from classmate Greg Slivestro with a header that went by the Potsdam keeper without him moving.  The goal was Winiarski's second of the season.

Santangelo capped the scoring for Oneonta with an unassisted goal in the 80th minute.  Santangelo controlled the ball and dribbled from the upper left corner of the box to the top middle where he then rifled a shot that skimmed off the inner part of the right post into the back of the net.

Oneonta finished the match with a 19-1 shot advantage and a 9-2 corner kick advantage.  Potsdam (7-4-1/1-2-1 SUNYAC) didn't register its shot until the 88th minute, as the Oneonta defense was stifling.
