In a match between two of the top teams in the Region, today's contest between SUNY Oneonta and Plattsburgh came down to the final minutes where the visiting Cardinals escaped with a 1-0 victory in SUNYAC men's soccer action. The loss for Oneonta (9-3-1/5-1 SUNYAC) snapped its five-game win streak while the win for 14
th ranked Plattsburgh (11-1-2/3-0-2 SUNYAC) kept them in second place in the conference.

The game-winner for Plattsburgh came in the 89
th minute on a long crossing pass from the right flank by Jonathan Gamboa. Waiting on the other end with a wide-open goal was sophomore Nicholas Laurent, who one-timed it to the back of the goal. Gamboa was able to break down the right side before sending the crossing pass.

The goal came two minutes after Cardinals keeper Mitchell Jordon had stopped a penalty kick by senior
Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury).

The two teams played to a scoreless opening half, but both teams had its share of scoring opportunities throughout.

In the 12
th minute, Oneonta senior
Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee) had a shot that trickled parallel to the goal line before being smothered by Jordon.

Four minutes later, Plattsburgh junior Alexis Archilla was loose in the box and tried to dodge Oneonta keeper
Vincent Pellegrino (Baldwin/Baldwin) to no avail, as Pellegrino covered the ball.

rd minute, Plattsburgh had a flurry in the box before a loose ball was knocked away by senior
Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury).

In the 29
th minute, Oneonta sophomore
Cory Santangelo (Sayville/Sayville) was able to get his head on a bouncing ball in the box, but was stopped by Jordon, who was lying on the ground.

The last real threat in the opening half came from Plattsburgh, as Gamboa broke loose and got a shot off, but Pellegrino made the save. On the ensuing corner kick, senior Clay Sherman had a header that just skipped off the top of the cross bar.

The second half was much of the same, but Oneonta seemed to have the edge in opportunities.

Junior
Hans Purtell (Johnson City/Johnson City) generated a couple of scoring chances including one in the 72
nd minute that just sailed over the cross bar.

Jordon finished the contest with seven saves while Pellegrino had one stop. The Red Dragons had a 14-6 shot advantage including 9-2 in the second half.

Oneonta will be back in action this coming Wednesday when they host Hamilton College on Red Dragon Field beginning at 4:30pm.
