Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer keeps rolling along in the SUNYAC

Red Dragons shutout SUNY Geneseo 4-0

Senior co-captain Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) got behind the SUNY Geneseo defense and chipped a ball over Logan Calvey 19 seconds into today's match, as the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team rolled past the Blue Knights 4-0.  The win for Oneonta (8-2-1/4-0-0 SUNYAC) was its fifth straight while Geneseo leaves town 5-4-3 overall and 1-2-1 in the conference.

Sophomore Jake Sweeney (East Moriches/Center Moriches) set up Williams' goal when he lifted a ball over the defense that Williams was able to get a one-touch on for his second goal of the season.  Oneonta would add two more goals before the 27-minute mark to put the game out of reach early.

Sweeney was the recipient of a crossing pass from senior Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee) in the 13th minute as the two players broke in on a two-on-one.  Sweeney was able to settle the pass before blasting a shot into the upper right 90 for his first goal of the season.

Nearly 14 minutes later, senior Sean Vinberg (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) scored his second goal of the year when he broke in from the right wing around three defenders before putting a shot past Calvey.

The final goal of the game came in the 83rd minute when senior Alex Winiarski (Great Neck/St. Anthony's) converted a penalty kick after Geneseo was called for a foul inside the box.

"Scoring 19 seconds into the match really set the tone for the game," said Head Coach Iain Byrne.  "It was another clean sheet for us.  Jared (Van Brunt) and Vinny (Pellegrino) have been outstanding all year in leading our defense."

Pellegrino was never seriously challenged in the match, as he only had to make one save.  Pellegrino has lowered his goals against to 0.57 while stringing together 250 consecutive scoreless minutes.  As a team, Oneonta now has recorded six shutouts including four by Pellegrino.

Oneonta outshot Geneseo 14-5 while earning three corner kicks.

Oneonta will look to keep its win streak alive while staying atop the SUNYAC when they host SUNY Potsdam and Plattsburgh next weekend for a pair of SUNYAC matches.  The Red Dragons will face Potsdam on Friday beginning at 3pm and Plattsburgh on Saturday beginning at 1pm.
