Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer continues to roll with win at previously unbeaten Vassar

The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team continues to roll, as today they disposed of Vassar College on the road by the score of 4-1.  Oneonta, the #5 team in this past week's NSCAA coaches' poll, is now 5-0 and have outscored its opponents by a margin of 17-1.

"Right now we are attacking the net at every opportunity, which makes us a threat for 90 minutes," texted coach Byrne.  Although he didn't score today, junior Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee) was immense and led the line all game."

Oneonta led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by sophomore Hans Purtell (Johnson City/Johnson City) in the 21st minute.  Senior Mitchell Cain (Marcy/Whitesboro) sent a cross into the box that Purtell headed into the back of the net.

Oneonta went ahead 2-0 in the 58th minute when freshman Cory Santangelo (Sayville/Sayville) took a pass from junior Colin Volpe (Commack/St. Anthony's) before converting a shot into the left corner of the goal.

Volpe scored next in the 71st minute with an assist from classmate Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury).  Williams played a ball into the box where Volpe rocketed a shot into the upper 90.

The final tally for Oneonta came in the 79th minute, as senior Justin Rivera (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) scored his first goal of the season unassisted.

Vassar (5-1-1) scored its goal in the 85th minute.

Oneonta held a 19-8 advantage in shots and earned three corner kicks.

"We are really playing well as a team early in the season," added Byrne.  "Our spring trip to Barcelona gave us a chance to bond and I feel it is helping us early on."
