Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#3 Men's Soccer battles #20 Rochester to scoreless draw

In a game between two top-20 squads, the No. 3 SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons battled the No. 20 Rochester Yellowjackets to a scoreless draw today on Red Dragon Soccer Field.  The tie for Oneonta keeps them unbeaten at 5-0-1 while the draw puts the Yellowjackets at 3-1-2.

Oneonta finished the match with a 14-7 advantage in shots while Rochester earned eight corner kicks to Oneonta's three.  Overall, the hosts had more dangerous scoring chances, but were unable to convert.

"It was a good game today between two top teams," said coach Iain Byrne.  "We created some great chances, but couldn't finish.  Rochester was dangerous on corner kicks and long throws."

In the fourth minute of the contest, sophomore Hans Purtell (Johnson City/Johnson City) had a shot that just hit the outside of the left post.  Over the next six minutes, senior Mitchell Cain (Marcy/Whitesboro) and junior Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) had opportunities inside the box.  Cain's shot was saved by Rochester keeper, Michael Shatkin, while Williams' shot just sailed over the cross bar.

Rochester's most dangerous scoring chance came in the 26th minute on a volley of a cross by Shane Dobles that Oneonta keeper, Vincent Pellegrino (Baldwin/Baldwin), pushed over the cross bar.

Both keepers ended up making four saves in the match.

Byrne added in regards to the ranking in this week's NSCAA Division III coaches' poll, "It's a great achievement for the boys to be ranked as high as we are right now.  Everyone will be gunning for us, so we'll have to be at our best each game including this Saturday against Rensselaer, who is also ranked and who is No. 2 in our region."

The Red Dragons will face No. 14 Rensselaer this Saturday at home beginning at 1pm.
