The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team competed at the John Reese Duals hosted by Messiah College.  Despite coming away 1-2 on the day, the Red Dragons gave preseason No. 2 Messiah all it could handle in a 21-20 loss.  Oneonta's other matches on the day included a victory against Johns Hopkins and a defeat versus York College of Pennsylvania.
 
Highlighting the day's individual matches was junior Shaun Gillen (Bohemia/Connetquot)'s pin of Josh Thomson of Messiah.  Thomson was a returning NCAA Division III All-American and preseason No. 1 at 174 lbs.  Gillen didn't even let Thomson escape the first period, as he put him away in one minute and thirty-six seconds.  Gillen would win his other two matches on the day to go 3-0 to lead the Red Dragons.
 
Senior Chad Obzud (Cohoes/Lansingburgh) and freshman James Bethel (Saugerties/Saugerties) each recorded a pair of wins today with no defeats.  The two nearly tried their best to bring Oneonta back in the final two matches versus Messiah, but couldn't find one or two more points.  Both of Obzud's victories were major decisions while Bethel recorded a technical fall win in his opening match of the day and a win by regular decision.
 
In Oneonta's lone team win against Johns Hopkins, juniors Adam Greene (Port Crane, NY/Chenango Valley) (141), Curt Rowley (Duanesburg/Duanesburg) (157) and Noah Valastro (Hudson Falls/Hudson Falls) (149) all recorded wins along with freshman Cameron Milliken (Albany/Albany Academy) (165).  Greene was able to pin Connor Joyce in 2:22 to earn six points for the Red Dragons.
 
Oneonta will compete at home for the first time next Saturday when Rhode Island College and Ithaca come to town.  Action begins in the Alumni Field House Dewar Arena at 11am.
