The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team closed its 2014 regular season schedule today at home with a 2-0 loss to Rensselaer. The Red Dragons are now 11-7, as they prepare to host New Paltz in the SUNYAC tournament semifinals this Wednesday beginning at 3pm.
Â
Despite being outshot (20-6) and out cornered (10-4) in the game, Rensselaer (6-11) made the most of its limited opportunities in stealing a victory on the road.
Â
Both of Rensselaer's goals came in the second half, as the two teams battled to a scoreless first 35 minutes of play.
Â
The Engineers got its first goal in the 45
th minute off a penalty corner. Junior Angela Cascio inserted the ball into classmate Hana Murphy, who didn't handle the ball cleanly at first. After repositioning herself and the ball, she was able to fire a shot that found its way through the defense and past the goalie for the 1-0 lead.
Â
Fourteen minutes later Rensselaer scored an insurance goal, as they went up 2-0. Junior Celia D'Agostino started the play by sending a perfect pass into the circle from the right flank where it found the stick of sophomore Colleen Fowler, who was in front of the goal. Fowler didn't waste any time in getting her shot off which just snuck past the foot of
Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool).
Â
Prior to the second Rensselaer goal, Oneonta looked as though they were going to get the equalizer with a flurry of shots and corners. The Red Dragons managed to get six shots off in between the two goals, but were unable to beat Hannah Clough, who saved the three shots that were on goal. Clough finished the game with 11 saves.
