The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team challenged the Gators of Sage on Senior Night, sending seniors
Whitney Blair (Binghamton/Windsor) and
Natalia Poljak (Brewster/Brewster) off with a 3-1 win. The win snaps the Gator's 20-match winning streak.
The Red and White came out on fire, chalking the first four points to its side of the leger, including a pair of
Erika Corbin (Kirkwood/Windsor) kills sandwiched around a
Kristen Polan (Westhampton/Westhampton Beach) and
Jill Darpino (Endicott/Union Endicott) block. The Red Dragons led by as many as seven in the first set following a key five-point run to open a 20-13 lead. The teams alternated points briefly to bring the score to 22-17. Corbin recorded the game-winning kill to give Oneonta a 25-19 win.
The fortunes would be opposite in the second set as the Red and White couldn't gain control, ultimately dropping the set 25-19.
The Red and White got back on course at the start of the third set. Corbin and
Lauren Pennino (Wantagh/Wantagh) combined for the set's first points on a block. The Red Dragons opened a set high eight point advantage behind the serve of Polan.
Paige Carpluk (Yaphank/Bellport) highlighted the spurt with a kill and a block. From there, the hosts cruised to a 25-17 set win, and 2-1 match advantage.
Neither team led by more than three in the fourth set. The see-saw affair would not allow wither school to take a clear cut advantage. An attacking error on Sage gave Oneonta the 20-19 lead that they would not relinquish. The Red and White capped the night with a 25-23 set win.
The Red Dragons host their annual Dig Pink Invitational on Friday and Saturday to conclude the 2014 season.
