The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team hosted its annual Dig Pink Invitational Friday and Saturday night in Dewar Arena. The Red Dragons went 2-1 during the two-day event with wins versus Hunter College, 3-2, and Baruch, 3-1, but fell to St. Lawrence 3-1.
In Friday's tournament opener, the Red and White took on the Hawks of Hunter College. The hosts took down the visitors 3-2 (25-14, 25-21, 22-25, 23-25, 15-10). Juniors
Jill Darpino (Endicott/Union Endicott) and
Hannah O'Neil (Brookhaven/Bellport) powered the victory with 19 and 13 kills, respectively. Junior
Karly Greco (East Patchogue/Bellport) and sophomore
Jessica Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) manned the setter position while chalking up 31 and 21 assists, respectively. On the defensive side, three Red Dragons had double-digit digs including
Allyson Coniglione (Glenville/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) (24), junior
Paige Carpluk (Yaphank/Bellport) (15) and Pelaccio (10). A quartet of players recorded five block assists (Darpino, O'Neil,
Lauren Pennino (Wantagh/Wantagh) and
Kristen Polan (Westhampton/Westhampton Beach)).
In Saturday's opener against St. Lawrence, the Red and White suffered a 3-1 (25-27, 25-17, 22-25, 18-25) set back. Darpino had nine kills to lead the attack along with 17 assists from Pelaccio. On the Defensive side, Congilione recorded a team-leading 11 digs. Pennino was a force up front as she recorded a team-high seven block assists.
The Red and White captured a win in the season finale against Baruch to the tune of 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 25-16). Freshman
Melissa Voyer (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) paced the Red Dragon attack with a dozen kills, followed closely by Polan with 11.
Erin Avery (Harpursville/Harpursville) handed out 19 assists on the match complimented by Pelccio's 18. Coniglone continued to lead the defense with 24 digs, while Darpino had a dozen of her own.
Coniglione was the Red Dragon's representative on the All-Tournament Team. Oneonta finishes the season with a 19-15 record.
